Multi-Platinum SAMA winning South African
singer-songwriter Zahara gets a nod at the 24th SAMAs for her latest offering “Mgodi”.
Johannesburg, 20th April 2018: Zahara continues her winning ways, after receiving a nod in the category for Best Afro Pop Album at the nominations announcement event in Boksburg, last night. Winning this award would bring the Songstress to a shared total of 18 SAMA awards between her 3 albums.
Recorded in Johannesburg with Mojalefa ‘Mjakes’ Thebe at the desk and a two features from International, Grammy award winning, Jazz Legend, Kirk Whalum – the album titled: ‘Mgodi’ which has already proven to be popular amongst the masses- reached certified ‘Gold’ status within 6 hours from release.
On how she feels about the nod, the singer-songwriter had this to say: “I’ve always said that I make music to share my story and hopefully touch lives in the process. Receiving a nomination is nice because it means that my peers acknowledge the work that went into the project. However, It is a little bitter-sweet for me, because I’m up against my mentor and friend- the late Robbie Malinga.”
Zahara’s debut album, ‘Loliwe’ released in 2011 was certified double platinum only 17 days after release and went on to sell in excess of 100 000 copies, garnering 8 South African Music Awards (SAMA’s) on the way. This was followed by 4 SAMA’s for ‘The Beginning Live’. 3 albums, and 17 SAMA’s into her career this superstar is now setting her sights on the future and further success heralded with new music in 2017.
‘Mgodi’ is now reaching for those same lofty heights after already being certified ‘Gold’ in South Africa.
